Student & Graduate Recruitment Process

Stage 1: Online Application & Assessment

Candidates apply through Allen & Overy Shearman's official careers portal and submit their CV, cover letter, and academic transcripts. The application should highlight relevant experience, skills, and motivation for joining the firm.

As a part of the online application, you will also need to complete an interactive assessment, which includes verbal and numerical reasoning items and two short motivation questions to complete via video.

The interactive assessment is untimed and should take around 45 minutes.

Stage 2: Assessment Day

If your application is successful, you will be invited to an assessment day, which will consist of two one-on-one interviews and one written assignment.

The first interview is based on a commercial case study, where you’ll have time to work through a brief and prepare a short presentation to deliver to your interviewer. This will be followed by a discussion on the key points from the case study. Following your case study interview, you will have 25 minutes to complete a short written exercise.

In the second interview, you will be asked a series of questions based on scenarios you may encounter as a trainee.

Stage 3: Offer and Feedback

Following the assessment day, candidates receive feedback and are informed about the outcome of their application. You will receive a job offer if you are successful.

How to Prepare for the Online Assessment

During the online assessment, you will need to complete a situational judgement test. The assessment entails reading some scenarios or watching videos and rating given responses to scenarios as most effective or least effective.

The interactive assessment is untimed and should take around 45 minutes. The interactive assessment is designed to provide a realistic preview of what you may experience as a trainee at A&O Shearman as well as give us an insight into your motivations. You will need to complete your application and interactive assessment before the deadline.
