Student & Graduate Recruitment Process
Stage 1: Online Application
Candidates apply through Clifford Chance’s official careers portal, submitting their CV and cover letter outlining their qualifications, experience, and interest in the firm.
On the application form, there are some motivation and skills-related questions where you need to write long answers. The overall application form may take around 45 minutes.
Stage 2: Online Assessment
During the online assessment stage, you will complete the Watson Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal. The test lasts 30 minutes and involves 40 questions that assess your critical thinking.

Stage 3: Assessment Day
If you are successful in your online assessment, your application will be closely reviewed by the recruitment team. If you meet the requirements for the role, you will be invited to the assessment centre.
Clifford Chance's assessment centre will take place in person, with an option to interview virtually in some circumstances, e.g., if you have a long way to travel.
The assessment centre will consist of a combined case study and competency-based interview with a Partner and a Senior Associate. This will include discussions around the case study, commercial questions, and competency-based questions. You'll also complete a written task and a group exercise.
Stage 4: Offer and Feedback
Following the Assessment Centre, candidates receive feedback and are informed about the outcome of their application. You will receive a job offer if you are successful.
How to Prepare for the Online Assessment
Clifford Chance's online assessment has 40 questions. This test is provided by Watson Glaser.
